In the creative writing piece I wanted to create the feeling of tranquility that being in art gallery can have on you. It persuades people to be immersed in the art and gives examples of specific exhibitions and galleries to visit. I wrote about my own personal thoughts on ‘Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose’ by John Singer Sargent, and how it makes me feels nostalgic, happy and connected to my childhood. I don’t think I encountered any problems in this asset as I enjoy creative writing and find flow when I write about things that interest me.
To continue this idea of personal connections and emotions towards art, I spoke to people in The National Gallery. I asked them why they had come to this specific gallery, which pieces were they drawn to and how coming to art galleries made me feel. This what my audio piece is about. I have never conducted interviews before so this was new to me. Going up to people was slightly nerving, but I soon gained confidence. It was interesting to be able to delve into peoples lives and hear what they had to say about themselves or the art. The general feeling most people had was that the gallery made them feel relaxed and inspired. I used my phone microphone to record, the quality is not high and there is a lot of background noise. If I was to do this again I would use a higher quality microphone. Although, the background noises do give a sense of the atmosphere in the gallery.
Again, continuing with the idea of peoples behaviours in galleries, I wanted to look at the way people stood, observed, pointed or reacted to the art pieces. In my video production, I walked around the gallery capturing people looking at art. I also looked at the art pieces, the architecture and tried to create the atmosphere of what it feels like to walk around The National Gallery. Again, because I used my phone to film, the quality was not a high resolution. I would like to use a camera from the University next time and possibly a tripod. I do like the hand held look but sometimes it is too shaky. The purpose of the video is to create the feeling of being in art gallery, with the relaxing mediative music and people slowly walking around.
